Can your iPad run the new iPad OS?

Posted by Davis Jefferson Twitter | Email

As of the last week in September, new iPad OS is available. Now you can make your iPad do all the new tricks that your iPhone is doing with iOS 13, and then some. But can your device run this new version of the iOS, developed specifically for iPads?

Here's the list of iPads compatible with iPad OS:

  • 12.9-inch iPad Pro
  • 11-inch iPad Pro
  • 10.5-inch iPad Pro
  • 9.7-inch iPad Pro
  • iPad (7th generation)
  • iPad (6th generation)
  • iPad (5th generation)
  • iPad mini (5th generation)
  • iPad mini 4
  • iPad Air (3rd generation)
  • iPad Air 2

How do you know which iPad model you have?

To find out, go to Settings -> General -> About. The model name will be found there. If your iPad's model name matches a model on this list, you are good to go!

But. If you're like me, who purchased a refurbished iPad mini 2 with cellular capability, within the last two years (because there were no refurbished iPad mini 3's available at the time), grab your Apple Card, it's time to go shopping!

Ah, it's not so bad. The "slightly" older models are sill getting maintenance updates at the version 12 level. I expect inter-compatibility for at least another year or two.

Also should mention that along with iPad OS, a new entry-level iPad model was announced. With this new model, the entire line now supports the Apple Pencil. iPad OS is looking better all the time.
